CISPA Researchers Win NSA Best Scientific Cybersecurity Paper Competition 2016

The publication “You Get Where You’re Looking For: The Impact of Information Sources on Code Security” by Prof. Michael Backes and his co-authors has won the 2016 5th Annual Best Scientific Cybersecurity Paper Competition of the National Security Agency (NSA). The paper was originally presented at the 2016 IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy in San Jose, California and deals with the question why software developers write programs containing security gaps and which information sources they use to look up security- or privacy-relevant issues. Michael Backes’ co-authors were Yasemin Acar, Sascha Fahl, Doowon Kim, Michelle L. Mazurek and Christian Stransky. Stransky is currently a PhD student in the research group of Michael Backes at CISPA. The Annual Best Scientific Cybersecurity Paper Competition recognizes the best scientific cybersecurity papers published within the respective year. The award ceremony was hosted by the Research Directorate at the National Security Agency.

Prof. Rossow’s “AmpPot” wins competition “Landmark in the Land of Ideas 2017”

Professor Christian Rossow, who has just been awarded the title “Innovator under 35”, and his team at CISPA have received the award “Landmark in the Land of Ideas 17” for their project “AmpPot”, a warning system against massive attacks on the internet. Johannes Krupp, PhD student at CISPA, attended the official award ceremony in Berlin on 26 June 2017.

The Initiative „Germany – land of ideas“ was founded by the German Federal Government and the Federation of German Industries (BDI) in 2005, and aims to improve Germany’s image as a powerful innovator and a creative force. The competition „Landmarks in the land of ideas“ is part of this initiative. In 2017, its theme is “Open your mind and unfold new ideas”.

CISPA Vice-Director Druschel receives EuroSys Lifetime Achievement Award

Prof. Peter Druschel, vice-director of CISPA, founding director of the Max Planck Institute for Software Systems and head of the Distributed Systems group at MPI-SWS has been awarded the “EuroSys Lifetime Achievement Award” for his numerous and significant contributions to research. His research particularly focuses on techniques to make distributed and mobile systems secure, accountable, and privacy-preserving.

Andreas Zeller receives ERC Proof of Concept Grant

CISPA Researcher and ACM Fellow Prof. Andreas Zeller has been awarded his second ERC Grant. After receiving the ERC Advanced Grant in 2011, the ERC Proof of Concept Grant will now enable him and his team to explore the commercial potential of BOXMATE and to develop a market-ready product by cooperating with one of CISPA’s spin-offs “Backes SRT”.

ERC grants are awarded on a regular basis by the European Research Council and are considered the most important and prestigious awards for research in Europe.
