For the proseminar “Hacking”, Prof. Dr. Christoph Sorge, Prof. Dr. Michael Backes, Sven Bugiel, Frederik Möllers, Stefan Nürnberger and Philipp von Styp-Rekowsky were presented on Wednesday, March 25, 2015, with the “Landespreis Hochschullehre”, the State Award for Outstanding University Education in Saarland 2014 by Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, Prime Minister of the State of Saarland. The award was issued to the team of six for their interdisciplinary proseminar “Hacking” of the summer term 2014.
The proseminar “Hacking” gives undergraduate students an overview about vulnerabilities of IT networks and systems by integrating both the technical and the legal aspects regarding hacking. The students are trained to understand how hackers operate, while learning the legal and ethical dimensions of both illegal and legal hacking activities. A complex technical infrastructure was set up, mirroring real systems and allowing the students to lawfully simulate attacks and having an inside look into the perspective of an attacker, helping them secure systems against those attacks in the future. The seminar will be held annually in the summer term for Bachelor students in Cyber Security or Computer Science at Saarland University.
